quest is a limited fact-finding inquiry to establish:
  • who has died
  • when and where the death occurred
  • the cause of death
  • information needed by the registrar of deaths so the death can be registered.
Inquests for the Essex jurisdiction are normally held in Chelmsford. Please see below for details of inquests and inquest openings held by Essex Coroner’s Service.
Inquests, inquest openings and pre-inquest reviews are usually held in open court. In order to facilitate this, the coroner's court list is published each working day by 5pm listing matters for inquest hearings (excluding documentary inquest hearings) two days in advance. Inquest openings, pre-inquest reviews and the documentary inquests will be listed for the following working day only. Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these lists but sometimes changes may be unavoidable.
Note to media: All names are provisional until the inquest is opened, and therefore details of the deceased should only be published after this point.
