Renewal of vows ceremonies

A renewal of marriage vows ceremony is for any married couple wishing to celebrate renewing their marriage vows and their commitment to each other in a unique and personal ceremony.

You may choose to renew your vows to commemorate a special wedding anniversary. Celebrating tenth and twenty fifth wedding anniversaries is especially popular with couples but the ceremony is just as appropriate for couples at any stage of marriage. If you got married abroad but also want a formal ceremony in the UK that involves your friends and family, a renewal of marriage vows ceremony may be the perfect option.

The choice of ceremony

You can have the type of ceremony you want. You may wish to exchange rings or gifts, choose readings or poetry or select music that is special to you. Important people in your lives, like your children, guests who were at your wedding and friends and family can also take part in the ceremony. You will need to ask two people to witness the signing of the certificate of the event.

Venue choices for renewal of marriage vows ceremonies

Renewal of marriage vows ceremonies can be held in registration offices and in venues that have been licensed by the County Council for civil marriages. You can hold renewal of marriage vows ceremonies in other locations, such as private houses or in the open air, but this is subject to prior inspection to determine the suitability of the location. There is a £30 fee for this inspection. You do not have to live in the area where you hold your ceremony.

A celebrant will conduct your ceremony but the ceremonies have no legal standing and are not legally binding on those who participate. The ceremonies must not have any religious content.
