Inquests

An inquest is a limited fact-finding inquiry to establish the answers to:
  • who has died
  • when and where the death occurred
  • how the cause of death arose
  • information needed by the registrar of deaths, so that the death can be registered.
Inquests for the Essex and Thurrock jurisdiction are normally held in Chelmsford each Tuesday and Thursday between 10.00 and 4.30.

Generally, inquests are held at New Bridge House or County Hall, but other locations are used from time to time.

Inquests for the Southend jurisdiction are normally held at the court house in Southend on Victoria Avenue.
