Pupils, tutors and tuition

On this page you can find information about pupils, tutors and tuition, advice on payments and funding, and further information for schools and parents.

Information about pupils

  • You will be advised by letter how many pupils you can register.
  • You can tutor the same pupil in both English and mathematics.  Please remember that if a pupil is registered for both English (10 hours) and mathematics (ten hours) this counts as two pupils from your allocation.
  • Children on the SEN register should be part of the school’s existing programme for Special Educational Needs, rather than a tuition programme like this.  These pupils are not specifically excluded from one-to-one tuition but it should not be used as a substitute for more appropriate support. It is designed for children who can benefit from an intensive burst of support.

Information about tutors

  • All tutors must hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) are not eligible at this moment in time
  • Currently employed teachers need to ask the Head teacher’s permission to become tutors in any form, even outside of school hours
  • Training is available for all tutors
  • It is possible for one-to-one tuition to be given by someone who is on maternity leave, as long as they are out of the maternity pay period (out of contractual and statutory pay).  If a tutor starts work whilst still in receipt of maternity pay they will be deemed to have returned to work, their maternity benefits will cease and they will be expected to return to their main employment.
  • Full time members of staff wishing to take on extra work as a tutor will need a contract between themselves and HR issued by the school.
  • Teachers from another school will need you to set them up as a relief employee.  A contract between them and HR will also need to be issued by the school.
  • Agency tutors are employed by the agency and you will pay the agency for their services.  All contractual paperwork should be issued by the agency. You must ensure the agency has completed the appropriate safeguard checks.
  • Tutor pool: We have a pool of tutors. Schools however, should carry out their own interviews, CRB and other necessary checks.

Information about tuition

  • You can change Individual Tuition Plans half way through the 10 hours of tuition. The tuition needs to be personalised and driven by the needs of the child.
  • A tutor will work with a pupil for ten hours and spend two hours preparing and liaising with teachers or subject leaders regarding the pupil's progress.
  • At the end of the block of tuition (ten hours per allocation) please return your information online and enter the completed dates and hours. The class teacher and tutor should meet formally to review the progress of each child.

Information for schools

  • Checks: Schools should ensure that CRB checks are carried out, as well as risk assessment linked to lone working and security policies
  • Selecting children: The best practice occurs where the selection criteria are fair and transparent. It is important to look at each child’s achievement and level of progress over a period of time.  Selection needs to be based on data and a teacher’s professional judgement. Behavioural issues need to be considered carefully.
  • Informing parents: Contacting parents by phone, or having an interview in person, can be effective to let them know about one-to-one tuition
  • Targets: The agreement of targets with parents is important.  Many schools found that writing letters isn’t enough and prefer meeting with parents and inviting them to a brief one-to-one with a class teacher and/or tutor. Some schools have invited parents to some of the tuition sessions.
  • Tuition during a school day can take place as long as tutors are not being paid twice for the work they carry out.
  • Keeping track: Most schools have devised a simple spreadsheet to keep track of how many hours a tutor has worked and with which pupil.
  • Rolling over tuition: If the tuition sessions have not been completed they can be continued in the next term. However, do not re-register the pupils because funding will already have been processed and their details stored. The funding will need to be used by the end of the summer term, unless you plan to roll over into a summer school.
  • Quality Assure Tuition (QA). The monitoring of tuition within each school is the responsibility of the headteacher and the school leadership team. The LA will carry out sampling QA, suggested pro formas that will be used are on the tuition website. Informal monitoring can take place on a day to day basis by listening to staff and children discuss tuition. A formal observation using the pro formas is suggested during the ten-hour block.

Payments and funding

  • If the tuition start date entered on the Department of Education website is submitted by the 6th of the month, funding for that allocation should be passed to Finance for payment to the school at the close of that calendar month. Exceptions may occur at the end of the financial year.
  • The school receives £20 per pupil towards administration of tuition. They may wish to find a way of using this to contribute to the teachers who will have to liaise with tutors.
  • The school is allocated £29.56 per hour for the payment of tutors.  The recommendation is that the tutor receives £25.56 gross to allow for the school’s deduction of its own costs.
  • The breakdown for one one-to-one tuition allocation can be found on our registration procedures page.
