To be truly effective, the governing body should commit to its own professional development and learning and if governors are to monitor and evaluate the school's work they need to visit the school.
Development and training
Make good use of your
Training Link Governor to help the governing body identify learning and development needs, and make sure governor development is discussed regularly at governing body meetings.
A regular
skills audit can help you build a team with the range of skills you need.
Inducting new governors
Think about matching new governors to an experienced governor as a 'buddy' to help them settle in and get quickly up to speed, and make it clear that you expect new governors to attend the one day induction course.
Governor visits
Regular planned visits give governors an insight and understanding about their school, and help to build trust and respect between staff and governors. The governing body should plan its visits to cover a wide range of school priorities (these will be in the School Development Plan) and each visit should have a clear purpose which aims to impact on school improvement.
