The safe storage of petrol is regulated by Trading Standards whether at a petrol station, farm, airfield or in relation to domestic storage. Petrol is a highly volatile and explosive product, which can dissolve many types of plastic. It is vital that any petrol supplies are stored in the correct types of container, and that their contents are clearly marked. Trading Standards has designated petroleum officers, who are able to answer queries relating to the safe storage of petrol.
Concerns relating to the appropriate use of ‘red’ diesel – intended for off-road use, such as in agricultural machinery and boats – should be addressed to
HMRC.
