Trading Standards Business Advice

If you run a business in Essex, we can help you comply with Trading Standards’ legislation.

Essex Trading Standards offers low-cost, online training on a variety of subjects, allowing for a flexible approach to your learning and development requirements.

Additionally, if you need to speak to a member of the Trading Standards team for further advice or support, all you’ll need to do is register with us. Don’t worry; we won’t give your information to third parties and we will respect your privacy.  

We know that trading standards legislation can be complex, which is why we offer a bespoke advice service that answers questions specific to your business and gives reassurance you’re meeting legal requirements such as: 

  • making sure the goods you sell are safe
  • clarifying what information must be put on food labels
  • confirming what details should be on a website
  • ensuring contract terms and conditions are protecting your business
  • improving age-restricted sales procedures
  • clarifying consumer refund policies

For general questions, free guidance is also available. Our business advice service remains free of charge to Essex businesses approved under the Buy with Confidence approved traders scheme.

Business advice packages

Once you’ve registered, you’ll be able to subscribe to one of our business advice packages, which range from a simple ‘pay as you go’ arrangement through to more formal Primary Authority Partnerships. If you are starting up in business for the first time we have a new starter package that will help you get going. Check out our scale of charges.

After we have completed the work on your business advice request, you will be sent an invoice for any outstanding amount and you will have 28 days to pay.

Primary Authority Partnerships

Primary Authority Partnerships enable you to be involved in your own regulation. It helps you to form a statutory partnership with us, which then provides robust and reliable advice for other local regulators to take into account when carrying out inspections or addressing non-compliance. The aim of Primary Authority is to make sure that local regulation is consistent at a national level and sufficiently flexible to address local circumstances. 

We support the Primary Authority Principle and will consider any request from an Essex business to enter into a Primary Authority Partnership.
