Weights and Measures, also known as Legal Metrology, relates to the testing and inspection of equipment to ensure that accurate measurements are being given. As well as routine inspections, the Weights and Measures team respond to complaints from the public regarding inaccurate measurements.
The service maintains a laboratory which, in addition to statutory obligations, also provides a service to businesses and consumers across the areas of weight or measure calibration and testing, as well as accurately measuring length and capacity.
For non-statutory work, there are charges in place for the use of both the Laboratory and the Weights and Measures Verification Service facilities. For example, should a business wish to ensure that the calibration of weighing or measuring devices used in their work is accurate, they should refer to the Weights and Measures Verification Service chart for a list of how the charge for this service will be calculated.
Measurements displayed by businesses are generally required by law to be displayed in metric measures (kilograms or litres, for example), although supplemental measures in Imperial units (pounds and lbs) can be displayed alongside, provided the metric weight is given greater prominence.
