Changing your child's current school (mid-year admission)

16 August 2018

This page is for parents who are considering changing their child from one primary school to another or one secondary school to another (which is referred to as a ‘mid-year’ transfer).

General advice

We strongly recommend that you contact the schools you are interested in directly about place availability before making any decision to move house or submit an application.
There is no guarantee in law of a place at a school you want or that places will be available at the same school if you are applying for more than one child. We advise you carefully check the availability of places at schools in advance of considering moving house. It is therefore vital that you do not assume that a particular school will be offered to your child before committing to a house move.
Please remember, moving schools is a serious step to take. You should not remove your child from his/her current school before you have an offer of another school place. If your child is already in another local school, we would advise you to discuss the situation with your child’s class teacher or headteacher before making an application for other schools as a move of school may not always be in your child’s best interests.

Before you apply

If your application is because of a house move you will need to attach evidence of your new address with the application.

If you are applying from overseas proof of residence such as an EU passport or endorsed passport or entry visa will be required with the application.
If your child has a Statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and you want to change your child’s current school please contact your local Statutory Assessment Service office.

Applying to change primary schools

If your child is already at primary school and you wish to transfer him/her to a different primary school in Essex, please complete the mid-year online application.

Please note that you will need to complete and submit the form in one session, it is not possible to save the form and return to it later.

Completing the online form is easy to do and once submitted you will be sent an acknowledgement email with a reference number. In most cases you can also upload address evidence with your form if required.

Upon receipt of an application we will contact your preferred school(s) about availability of places. We expect to let you know the outcome by letter within 2 to 3 weeks of receipt of your application. In some cases it may take a little longer.

The Council does not consider mid-year applications for a place for a September start until after the summer half-term break. Therefore, if you have applied for a place in September prior to half term, please allow for this timescale to elapse following the break.

Please do not use the mid-year online application form to apply for a Reception school place for next September.

If you're unable to use the online form please complete and return the mid-year application form.

Applying to change secondary schools

If your child is already at secondary school and you wish to transfer him/her to a different secondary school, you will need to apply directly to the school. Please download and complete the Mid-Year Secondary School Application Form.
