Minority ethnic children

The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) team works with other teams within the local authority to support schools and all educational settings in:

  • promoting and raising the achievement of pupils from minority ethnic groups, including meeting the particular needs of pupils learning English as an additional language (EAL) and Traveller pupils
  • ensuring the principles of race equality, inclusion and community cohesion are evident in practice
  • tackling racism and promoting intercultural awareness through the curriculum and other activities
  • responding appropriately and effectively to racist incidents
  • developing and maintaining home school and community links

There are approximately 24,000 children from a black and minority ethnic background in Essex. 9,000 of these pupils speak English as an additional language. More than 170 languages are spoken in our county.

If your child is a victim of racial harassment or bullying, EMTAS staff can offer you advice and support.  You can contact:
