Post-16 transport is available for students between the ages of 16 and 19. The application process differs depending on whether a student has been in receipt of a statement of special educational needs (SEN) up to and including the age of 16. All students are required to apply for Post 16 transport by completing the relevant application form.
Students who have never had a statement of SEN
You can apply for Post 16 transport Assistance from Essex County Council if you have never had a statement of special educational needs and you are:
- Under 19 at the beginning of the academic year (1 September)
- Attending a full time course at a school, sixth form or college that is funded by the Young People’s Learning Agency
- Living over 3 miles away from the school/college you have chosen
- Attending the nearest maintained establishment at which the course, or the majority of the course, is offered. The majority of the course means 50% or more; for example, in the case of A/AS levels, 2 out of 3 or 2 out of 4.
There is a charge for transport for students in school years 12 and upwards. The charge is set at £500 for the 2012/13 academic year.
You may be entitled to have the £500 charge waived if you are in receipt of certain qualifying benefits. For more information, please refer to our application and guidance form.
Students who have a current or have previously had a statement of SEN
If you currently have a statement of special educational needs (SEN), your statement will continue beyond age 16 if you are staying on at your Special Educational Needs school. As a Post 16 student, your transport needs will be re-assessed and, if you are still entitled to transport, the appropriate transport for your individual needs will be identified.
You will no longer have a Statement of SEN if you have decided to move onto college.
