Responsibility for the maintenance of trees on road verges in Essex falls to different authorities, depending on the district or borough in which the tree is located.

If the tree is located in one of the following districts or boroughs:

  • Braintree
  • Brentwood
  • Castle Point
  • Chelmsford
  • Maldon
  • Rochford
  • Tendring (except for the towns of Clacton, Frinton and Walton)
  • Uttlesford
Responsibility for maintenance falls to Essex County Council. If you encounter a problem, you should report it to us.

If the tree is located in one of the following districts or boroughs:

  • Basildon
  • Colchester
  • Epping Forest
  • Harlow

Or within the towns of Clacton, Frinton and Walton, then maintenance is carried out on our behalf by the local district or borough council. If you encounter a problem, you should report it to the district or borough council directly.
