Biological Records In Essex (BRIE)

Biological Records In Essex (BRIE) is a partnership aiming to centrally manage biological records for the following areas:

  • The modern administrative county of Essex County Council
  • Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock unitary authorities
  • The South Essex and North Essex vice-county areas
  • Sea life extending 12 miles from the Essex coastline.

BRIE work with organisations and individuals throughout Essex who record biological data, ensuring that records are kept up to date and making the information held accessible to everyone. We are currently establishing this new Essex Records Centre and aiming to develop a range of products and services to deliver biodiversity information to a wide range of users.

Biological information enables us to monitor the diverse range of animal and plant species in the Essex area, using the information gained to inform decision making and helping us to protect and nurture threatened species and habitats.

BRIE is currently carrying out a pilot study, based in Tendring, that will help local authorities to meet their biodiversity targets and responsibilities. We hope that, upon successful completion, this pilot will be rolled out across Essex.
