The fostering process

The fostering process can seem a little daunting, but we aim to make it as straightforward as possible. Our step by step guide will show you what’s involved.  The fostering process currently takes between four and six months to complete from the assessment starting.

Step one

  • Request an information pack and/or attend an event to find out more about fostering, meet social workers and talk to foster carers. You can also complete your enquiry form online.

Step two

  • Book an initial home visit so a social worker can visit you at home to discuss your individual circumstances. This is a good time to think carefully about fostering and the ages of children you might consider.

Step three

  • Attend the 'Skills to Foster' three day training course which gives you information to help you decide if fostering is right for you and your family. It forms part of the assessment process and explores the role of fostering and the skills needed to help you look after foster children.

Step four

  • We make more home visits, and meet the other members of your household.  If you're a couple we see you together and separately.  If you have children we speak to them as well to make sure they're happy about a new child coming into their home.  We visit at least three people who know you well to obtain personal references.  Previous partners will be contacted where applicants have been married before or lived with a partner.  We’ll also ask for a reference from your employer.

Step five

  • As we work through the assessment process with you, you'll have to give us permission to carry out relevant safeguarding checks including police and probation checks.  You’ll need a medical carried out by your doctor.

Step six

  • You and your social worker attend a fostering panel to discuss your assessment which would have been shared with you. The panel will make a recommendation about your suitability to foster.  The Fostering Service will then make a decision as soon as possible based on this recommendation.

Step seven

  • After approval as a foster carer you will receive your foster care handbook containing information to help you look after foster children.

Step eight

  • Moving-in day. A social worker makes the necessary arrangements for a child to come and stay with you.

Step nine

  • A social worker from your local fostering team will support you.  It’s important you telephone when you need to.  All our foster carers are recognised as vital members of the professional team caring for a young person.  We offer support, including group meetings and your social worker will visit you regularly at home to talk about how you're getting on.
