Details about a birth family

Before deciding whether to give the information, the adoption social worker will consider your welfare and all the circumstances of your adoption. Should you wish to trace a birth relative, the welfare and wishes of the person you want to contact must also be considered.

When you come to see us

When you come to see us, we'll give you the opportunity to share your feelings and help you make the decision that's right for you. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend for support. It's important to take matters at their own pace and to think things through before each stage of the process.

The information given to you may produce strong emotions so it can be helpful for the social worker to be there to answer any questions and advise you further.

The adoption social worker will help you consider the implications of tracing a birth relative. We can give you suggestions about how to do this as we do not offer a tracing service. Many people do not wish to trace, and there is no pressure on you to do so.
