Staying safe

Essex County Council is committed to protecting vulnerable people. If you are, or if you care for, a vulnerable adult, you need to consider how care should be provided in order to ensure the independence, safety and wellbeing of that person.  There is some advice on this in the adult safeguarding pages.

You also need to consider how you can stay safe at home and in your community, as often some small actions now can prevent bigger problems in the future.

You may not be aware of the range of services available to Essex residents to help you do this, these include telecare, community wellbeing projects and community safety.

Home Safety

There are many things to consider if you are to ensure that your home is the safest environment possible.

Falls Prevention

There are many steps you can take to ensure that you, or those you care for, have as few accidents as possible.  The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) offer some useful advice in their home safety section.

You can also speak to your GP about the Falls Prevention Programme at your local Primary Care Trust.

In addition, the AskSARA website has information that can help you protect yourself against a potential accident.

Fire Safety

You are probably aware of the benefits of fitting a smoke alarm and checking it regularly to make sure that the batteries are still working. However, you will find a great deal more information on the Essex Fire Service website.

You can also book a free fire safety check from the Essex Fire Service by telephoning 0845 601 2495.

You can also visit the Putting Essex People First Information Gateway for more information to help you stay safe in your own home.
