Assessments

Carer's assessments are for carers over 18 who care for someone over 18 without payment (excluding Carers Allowance). You can choose between a career's assessment or a joint assessment.

If you do not fall into this category, the carers page has information for parent carers and young carers

Carer's assessment

As an adult carer you are entitled to an assessment from your local authority.

Having a carer's assessment may sound daunting, but it is a positive step. It will allow you to talk about your responsibilities and how caring affects your health and wellbeing, and whether you have time for yourself.

It is an informal chat between you and your assessor and can, in some circumstances, be done over the phone. The assessor can look at what help and support we may be able to give you.

You can request this assessment, whether or not the person you care for is receiving services, by contacting us on 08457 430 430 or by completing the Let Us Help You self-assessment form and returning it to:

Joint assessment

The person you care for is entitled to a community care assessment to look at their social care needs. If you and the person you care for prefer, you can choose have a joint assessment. This is where you and the person you care for receive an assessment together.

This is often preferred when your situation is quite straightforward and you do not feel you need any specific support; but it is up to you and the person you care for to make that decision.

A joint assessment is arranged by contacting us. Information about what the person you care for may be entitled to and how to arrange your joint assessment can be found on the care for adults page.
