You are a Parent Carer if you are the parent of a child or young person under the age of 18 who has additional needs due to illness or disability.
Your need for support will be assessed as part of your child’s social care assessment. These assessments take into account the needs of the child, parents and the family as a whole.
Social care workers will work with you on any assessments. Further information, including how to access these services, can be found on the Children with disabilities or special needs page.
Once your child turns 18 you are considered an Adult Carer and are entitled to an Adult (unpaid) Carers Assessment from Adult Social Care.
