What to do if you are affected by domestic abuse

27 August 2010

The information on this page is for anyone who is affected by domestic abuse.  You may be experiencing it, or worried for a friend, colleague or family member who you suspect is a victim of abuse.

Recognise that it is happening. The information on our what is domestic abuse page can help you recognise signs of abuse.
Realise that it is not your fault. You cannot control another person’s violence and abuse towards you.  No one has the right to do this to you and there is never an excuse for abusive behaviour.  Responsibility lies solely with the abuser.
Seek help. There are a number of local and national organisations who can offer confidential help and support.

If you are in immediate danger, you should call the police on 999.
