The Essex Record Office runs an extensive programme of events during the year. This includes workshops, classes and themed events. The majority of these events are held at the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford, but other locations across the county are also used. You can
download the current programme for free. If you wish to be added to our mailing list, and receive a printed copy of the programme, please

Events for schools
The Essex Record Office provides education sessions in schools and at the Record Office building through the Heritage Education Unit, as well as a
newsletter with ideas and events for pupils.
The Heritage Education Unit (HEU) can provide sessions about different aspects of historic research, such as using documents to find out about the history of your local area, and different periods of local history, such as Essex in Tudor times and Essex during the war. The HEU makes use of the full range of archives held by the Record Office, including written documents, sound and video archives, photographs, maps and census information.
The HEU also works with schools, museums and other organisations, providing source material and educational support. The Unit consists of a Heritage Learning and Access Officer and a Heritage Education Officer. We also have a network of freelance educators who are trained to deliver our sessions.
Sessions can be held in schools or at the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford and last between one and two hours. All sessions taking place in schools are charged at £2 per pupil, whilst sessions based at the Essex Record Office are free of charge.
