  Archive access points

In addition to the Essex Record Office (ERO) in Chelmsford, there are a number of additional ways that the archives can be accessed. Contact details for each of the access point locations are available on the contacts page.
 
 
The sites can be found in Colchester, Harlow, Saffron Walden, Southend-on-Sea and in several London Boroughs.
 

Seax

The ERO’s online database contains a record of each document held in the archive. Some documents, but not all, have an associated photographic record. Access is free at the Seax website.
 
 

Colchester  

Located on the first floor of the Colchester Library, the Local Studies Library is located in the Quiet Zone. The library is open during the following hours: 
 
  • Monday – Friday: 9am – 6.30pm
  • Saturday: 9am – 5.30pm
  • Sunday: 1pm – 4pm


There is not always a member of staff on duty in the Quiet Zone of the library. If you know you will need specific help, or require non-current material, please contact us ahead of time to ensure staff will be available to help you.
 
 
Colchester Library Local Studies collection includes the following ERO resources:

Harlow

Located in the Museum of Harlow, the Harlow Archive Access Point is staffed during the following hours:
 
  • Tuesday - Saturday: 10am – 4pm

  • Microfiche copies of parish registers for the following parishes: Hatfield Broad Oak; Great Hallingbury; Little Hallingbury; Harlow, St Mary and St Hugh; Harlow, St John the Baptist; Harlow, St Mary Magdalene; Latton; Matching; Nazeing; Nettleswell; Great Parndon including Staple Tye; Little Parndon; Roydon and Sheering
  • Microfilm copies of tithe awards for the local area
  • Microfilm copies of manorial records for the local area
  • Microfilm copies of parish council records for the local area
  • Microfilm copies of Epping Board of Guardians records
  • Microfilm copies of school records for the local area
  • Microfiche copies of census returns for the local area
  • Records for Harlow New Town, including building plans, maps and photographs. 

 

Saffron Walden

Located on the first floor of Saffron Walden Library, the Saffron Walden Archive Access Point is staffed during the following hours:
 
  • Tuesdays and Fridays: 9am – 1pm, 2pm – 5pm
  • Saturdays: 9am – 1pm.
Resources can be used on a self-service basis at other times during library opening hours.

Southend-on-Sea

The Southend-on-Sea Archive Access Point is located in Southend Central Library.
 
  • Monday to Friday: 8am - 10pm
  • Saturday: 8am - 6pm
  • Sunday: 11am - 5pm

 

Southend-on-Sea Archive Access Point contains the following ERO resources:
 
  • Microfiche copies of parish registers for the whole of the county of Essex
  • Countywide microfiches of land tax assessments and registered wills
  • Microfilms of some parish records for the Southend-on-Sea, Rochford and Castle Point areas
  • Microfilms of some family and estate records (mainly deeds and manorial records) for the Southend-on-Sea, Rochford and Castle Point areas
  • Photographs of tithe maps and microfilms of tithe apportionments for parishes in south east Essex with transcribed tithe awards;
  • Microfiche index to settlement papers
  • Microfilm copies of a selection of other records relating to the Southend area, including Hearth Tax returns 1662-1675, marriage licences and histories of the Hundred of Rochford. 

 

London boroughs

Some parts of the ancient county of Essex are now London boroughs. Records for these areas may be held outside the ERO. 
 

London Borough of Waltham Forest

Archives are based at Vestry House Museum and Archives, Vestry Road, Walthamstow, E17 9NH. Vestry House houses parish registers for Walthamstow and most of Leyton and Chingford.
 

London Borough of Redbridge

Some records relating to Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford are now located at the Local Studies and Archives Service, Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford, IG1 1EA. More detailed information can be found at the Redbridge Local Studies and Archives Service web page.
 

London Borough of Newham

Records, other than parish records, relating to West Ham and East Ham are now located at the Newham Archives and Local Studies Centre, Stratford Library, 3 The Grove, London E15 1EL. More detailed information can be found at the Newham Archives and Local Studies Library web page.
 

Barking and Dagenham

Records other than parish records relating to Barking and Dagenham may be held at the Archives and Local Studies Centre, Valence House, Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, RM8 3HT. Tel: 020 8227 5240. Email: tahlia.coombs@lbbd.gov.uk
 

Havering

Records other than parish records relating to Romford may be held at the Local Studies and Family History Centre, Central Library, St Edward's Way, Romford, RM1 3AR. Tel: 01708 432392. Email: simon.donoghue@havering.gov.uk. You will need to make an appointment before visiting.
