Volunteering with the Home Library Service

30 September 2014

The following libraries need Home Library Service volunteers:

Chelmsford Clacton Coggeshall Epping
Hadleigh Harlow Harwich Mark Hall
Old Harlow Rochford Saffron Walden Springfield

Join over 400 volunteers and help us deliver an individual service to customers who, through health or caring issues, are not able to get to their local library. If you love reading and enjoy chatting to people, this might be the perfect role for you.

Working typically half a day each month, you can choose to work alone or with another volunteer. You might visit people living alone, or individual residents in care homes.

You would select and deliver books, audio books, DVDs and information to the people you visit, using the library’s data on the type of material each Home Library Service customer likes to read.

Volunteers that work with care home residents also act as a link between the care home and library staff. They can promote what’s happening in the local library and community as well as offering an additional opportunity to start book-based activities such as a reading group or read-aloud sessions.

All our Home Library Service volunteers can claim mileage payments, have training for the role and are supported by library staff. They can also sign up for a free monthly e-newsletter for additional support.
