Babies and toddlers

Introducing children to books and other resources at an early age can have a big impact on their development. At all of our libraries, you will find a wealth of picture books which they will love. We even have board books especially designed for little hands to hold. Stories can also be a great way of introducing children to new experiences, such as toilet training.

Baby and toddler rhyme times

Baby and toddler sessions run in all Essex libraries and offer a great opportunity for you and your child to share rhymes, have fun together and join in with other families. To find your nearest session, search for your local library

Some libraries have volunteering opportunities to help with baby and toddler times.

You receive the Bookstart Baby pack via your health visitor when your baby is 7–9 months old. You receive the Treasure Chest pack via your pre-school when your child is 3 years old.  If you prefer you can collect either free pack from your local library.

Visit the Bookstart website to find out more about the Bookstart project and take part in lots of fun activities.

Bookstart 20
Bookstart is 20 years old this year and is asking parents and carers to pledge to share 20 books a year with their children. To mark the occasion, Essex Libraries are lending their support to the campaign.

Library visitors can pick up a pledge postcard from their local Essex Library or make a pledge online.
