If you’re considering self-employment, are thinking about setting up your own enterprise, or are already in business, use the Essex Libraries Business Information Service. We provide you with access to reliable and up-to-date information to support your decisions.

 

Use your Essex Libraries card to access the online business resources that the library service subscribes to on your behalf. You can use them on any library computer and the majority are also available from home. Book a library computer online or by in the library.

Alternatively, you can ask us to help find the information you want.

Getting started in business or self-employment

Find out about hundreds of business opportunities, including market potential and how to get started. The Business Opportunity profiles in COBRA are particularly useful. If you already have an idea, our trained staff can help you get the information you need.

With this you can assess the viability of your ideas, get guidance through the process of starting up and tackle all the practicalities of finance, employing staff, marketing, tax and everything else involved in running your business.

Help with your business tax matters

HM Revenue & Customs offers a range of free webinars, emails, videos and e-learning, covering subjects such as Income Tax, National Insurance, PAYE, Self Assessment, VAT and International Trade. These might be especially useful for the newly self-employed and new employers.
