This month Essex Libraries has launched 10 Library Things to do before you’re ten – a checklist to help parents and children get the most out of their local library.

It comes after the under-fives checklist earlier in the year and is a fun way for children and families to explore their local library and find out about all the services available.

The ten things are:

  • Find out where your local Essex Library is - Did you know there are 74 libraries in Essex? Find out where your local library is today and when it is open, and then prepare for your first visit

  • Join the library - If your child hasn’t got their own library card get them one today. You can join online now or in person when your local library is open. Once they have their library card they can use any library in Essex and borrow up to 14 books

  • Use a library computer - Has your child got use of a computer at home? It’s great if they have, however if your family sometimes find there is a queue for the home PC, then send them along to use a library computer – it is free to use, all they need is their library card

  • Take a book outdoors! - We have some great ideas for extending your story time for your child. From worm charming to flying kites, there are some really exciting activities to do outdoors

  • Borrow an e-book or e-audiobook - Libraries have a huge amount of books, but we also have an ever growing selection of e-books and e-audio. These are available to borrow 24/7 on any internet enabled device

  • Come along to a library event - Find out what is happening in your local library. Would your child like to join in at a Code Club, create something at our Block Builders session, or join a homework club? Find out what event or club your under 10 can join in with

  • Get some homework help - If you child has some homework Essex Libraries is your one stop shop. If you can’t get into the library there are a wealth of resources that your child can use from home. Have a look with them today!

  • Reserve a book - If your child knows of a particular book or subject they want to read or a particular author they want to try they can use the library catalogue to reserve books from home, have them sent to any library of their choice and then get a notification when they are available to collect.  You can reserve up to 28 books at a time!

  • Borrow a recommended read from Essex Libraries - We have some great ideas that are really exciting! If your child is stuck with what to read next, then tempt them with something new!

  • Join the Summer Reading Challenge - Our last thing to do in the library before your child is 10 is to join the Summer Reading Challenge. In 2015 it was Record Breakers, in 2016 it was The Big Friendly Read and in 2017 it was Animal Agents. Did your child take part in any of them?
