Active Essex: Celebrate your sporting heroes

2 September 2016

Do you know an Essex champion? Enter them for an Active Essex Sports Award 2016 today!

Nominations are now open for the annual awards and the County Sports Partnership for Greater Essex is looking to celebrate Essex’s home-grown sporting talent.

Following the unprecedented success of some of the county’s athletes at this year’s Olympics, the team aims to highlight not only Essex’s unsung heroes, but the people, groups and organisations that work tirelessly behind the scenes to promote physical activity and provide local opportunities for people to take part.

Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Sport and Physical Activity, said: “The county has seen lots of fantastic sporting feats from local athletes already this summer and Essex residents are undoubtedly feeling inspired with the prospect of the Paralympics just around the corner.

“The Active Essex Sports Awards are not only a great platform for showcasing the intense training all athletes put in, but also the tremendous amount of work that goes into promoting sport in the county.

“There are plenty of categories to choose from this year and local people are going to be spoilt for choice with the amount of local talent Essex has – I’d encourage everyone to make a nomination.”

For the first time this year, the award for Sports Personality Of The Year will be left in the hands of local people, as the team open up the category to a public vote.

This year’s winner will have big shoes to fill, as last year’s award went to Colchester-born 2016 Olympic Gold Medal sailor, Saskia Clark.

Azeem Akhtar, the new Chair of Active Essex, said: “The annual sports awards highlight those making outstanding contributions to sport and physical activity across our county and it is their passion and effort we applaud.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the nominations and meeting the finalists at the ceremony in December.”

Nominations can be made via www.activeessex.org and the closing date for entries is 16 October 2016.
