Parents in Essex can now apply for their children’s reception places.
Children are entitled to start primary school in the September after their fourth birthday, and parents/carers of children born during the period 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 must apply between 13 November 2017 and 15 January 2018.
Essex County Council has warned that any late applications, submitted after the deadline on 15 January 2018, will only be considered once all on-time applications have been determined.
The council has also encouraged parents to use all four of the preferences available and to check the admissions criteria for each school they wish to apply for.
Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “Starting school for the first time is a significant milestone in every child’s life and we understand that deciding which schools to apply for can be a hard decision to make.
“To ensure parents have the best chance of being offered a preferred place, I would again stress the importance of submitting applications on time and using all four of the preferences available.
“I would also encourage parents to carefully consider the admissions criteria for each school they are applying for and to make use of all of the information available on our website.”
As a result of its continued investment in new school places, Essex County Council has an excellent track record of offering the overwhelming majority of pupils a preferred school place.
It spent about £74million creating 2,535 new places across Essex for September 2017 and was able to offer a record percentage of children their parents’ preferred place.
