Delegation from China visit Essex healthcare professionals

15 September 2017

A delegation of eighteen doctors from China visited surgeries and hospitals in Essex to learn about the UK’s healthcare system with the focus on GP surgeries.

The doctors, from the city of Wixu in Jiangsu, visited Essex on a three week visit from 4 to 16 September.

They looked at examples on GP Services and Primary Care in the UK. They attended lectures and site visits at Braintree Community Hospital and North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group as well as other Essex based sites.

The main subjects covered during the visit, included:

  • The NHS system and multi-layered healthcare
  • The GP Practice structure and management
  • The role of the GP and their education and training
The fact finding visit was organised and hosted by Essex County Council’s International Trade Department, Essex International who have developed long term partnership with the Jiangsu Provincial Health Commission that spans over 30 years.  This follows on from another healthcare exchange this year that took place in April.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Essex County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, said: “We were delighted to welcome our guests from China to show them our first class facilities in Essex and for them to learn best practice from our healthcare professionals. Essex International provided a tailored package delivering expertise from local organisations that ensured the doctors received invaluable training during their time spent here.

“Essex is ahead of the rest of the UK in its established access to China and exploring and developing global opportunities in the market. Essex International can also assist any company interested in the China market. We have close links with Jiangsu, which has brought in a variety of beneficial exchanges such as education, culture, business and trade and we look forward to future collaborations.”

Ge Jing, International Trade Coordinator said: “We received a warm welcome from Essex International who tailor made the course for us. They invited experts and doctors to deliver the lectures, and high quality interpreter to translate for us. We also visited a GP surgery, a pharmacy and a community hospital.
“As a result of the visit, we now and we have had a better understand of the NHS system, the work of GP practices and the roles and responsibilities of GPs and it has expanded our horizon. We are very happy with Essex County Council’s organisation work and we would like to send our sincere thanks to Essex International.”

The Essex-Jiangsu relationship has expanded over the years from education and cultural links to the main focus now being on economy. The relationship has boosted the Essex economy by £14 million.
