Essex Artists Invited to Contribute to London 2012 Celebrations

26 August 2011

The scheme will allow artists of all abilities a chance to devise a variety of activities and projects to contribute towards an outdoor performance programme called Sparks will Fly, a county-wide celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, taking place from May until July 2012.

The projects could include devising participatory arts projects with local communities and designing eye-catching décor to bring a carnival atmosphere to Essex.

Successful grant applications have been received from many areas, but to ensure the entire county can take advantage of this opportunity we are keen to hear from artists looking to develop projects in Basildon, Brentwood, Epping, Maldon, Tendring and Uttlesford.

Applications are open and close at 5pm on Monday 31 October 2011. To apply, contact the Essex County Council Arts Development team on 01245 244615 or e-mail arts@essex.gov.uk.

The Arts in Essex Small Grants Scheme, which supports hundreds of artists across the county, provides high-quality arts activities to the people of Essex.

County Councillor Jeremy Lucas, Cabinet Member for Environment and Culture, said: “We’re delighted that the Arts in Essex Small Grants Scheme continues to bring the arts to communities as well as providing the opportunity for growing artists to be supported as they develop their artistic skills.

“This is a very exciting opportunity that will provide an artistic and cultural contribution to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

County Councillor, Stephen Castle, Cabinet Member for Education and the 2012 Games, added: “We have already seen a number of remarkable arts projects throughout Essex which have brought local communities together and inspired young people, such as East meets West and the Journey to the Podium.

“I hope local artists will continue to be inspired by the London 2012 Games, and, with the support of the Small Grants Scheme, contribute rich and vibrant ideas towards the Sparks will Fly event in 2012.”
