Essex County Council encourages residents to use their social media sites during the Olympic Games

27 July 2012

Essex County Council is urging residents to upload their photos during the two weeks of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  As a Host County for the Olympic Mountain Biking, and many community events planned, there will be ample opportunities to snap events and celebratory activities throughout the county.

Essex County Councillor Stephen Castle, Cabinet Member for Education, Life Long Learning and the 2012 Games commented: “Social media sites are a fantastic way to share photos, especially during an event as spectacular as the Olympic Games.

"There will be some fantastic photo opportunities over the coming days and I hope people will share their experiences and memories with others by sharing their photos on our Essex County Council Facebook and Twitter pages.”

Social media sites are an easy way to share photos and comments and are becoming ever increasingly popular. At Essex County Council we have almost 8,000 followers on Twitter and a growing following on Facebook.

A great example of social media use was evident during the Olympic Torch Relay, where residents were very enthusiastic using the popular hashtag #essextorchrelay in many of their tweets, with over 400 tweets including the hashtag.

Many of these tweets commented on how proud people were to live in Essex and how amazing it was to have such a fantastic event come through our county. As we host the Olympic Mountain Bike events in Hadleigh this summer, we hope to rally the same kind of joy from being involved.

To upload your photos and comments to our social media sites, like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/essexcountycouncil
or follow us on twitter @Essex_CC. To join in the excitement for the Olympic Mountain Bike event in Hadleigh use #mtbhadleigh in your tweets.
