As we countdown to London 2012, Essex athlete, Chloe Rogers will not only be flying the flag for Essex, but Great Britain, as she has been selected to compete for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Hockey events.
Chloe, 27, from Harlow, was the top scorer for England in the 2006 World Cup and made her international debut against Japan in 2003. She has competed in all major hockey tournaments since 2006, including the last two Commonwealth Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In 2010 she was part of a team which won a bronze medal at the World Cup in Argentina, which was the first ever World Cup medal won by an England women’s team.
Chloe commented:” I am delighted to have made the final GB squad for the London 2012 Olympic Games. It has been the great efforts and commitment over the last 4 years since the Beijing Games that has got the team to where we are now as we chase that gold at London 2012. The first step has been achieved, to make the team, but we all have massive ambitions to achieve more than just being there”.
Essex County Councillor Stephen Castle, Cabinet Member for Education and the 2012 Games, commented: “This is fantastic news for Chloe and of course very exciting for Essex as yet another local athlete will be representing us at London 2012. I want to congratulate Chloe for all her hard work and I hope the whole of Essex will join me in supporting her and wishing her all the best for the Games.”
As well as being a member of the Team GB, Chloe also maintains her role as a Team Essex Ambassador. Established by Essex County Council, the Team Essex Ambassador initiative provides top athletes in the county with grants so that they have the best chance to compete in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Team Essex Ambassadors help to promote sport across the county, working with schools and sports clubs to inspire the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes within Essex. Chloe has been a Team Essex Ambassador since 2009. She has attended a wide range of events, including the launch of Uttlesford Sporting Heroes in January.
Chloe comments: “The support I have had over the last four years from Essex County Council through the Ambassador scheme has been invaluable and has made a massive contribution to all my achievements every year, thank you to all.”
