Local people are being asked to share their views on Essex highways and transport services – from the condition of roads and footways to the quality of cycling facilities.
The responses, from individual households chosen at random, will be compared with the views of other members of the public across England and Scotland as part of the National Highways and Transport (NHT) Public Satisfaction survey.
Essex County Council is investing £66 million into road improvements over the coming year (2016/17).
Over the past year the county has seen a 12 per cent reduction in road defects across the county
following major investment in the road network.
Other success stories over the past 12 months include the 10th anniversary of the Sandon Park and Ride in Chelmsford, a continuing £50 million investment in cycle, bus and road infrastructure in Colchester, a three million square metre countywide road surfacing project last summer and the recent resurfacing of a number of sections of the A127 between the M25 and Leigh
Essex County Council also secured the Highways Maintenance Efficiency award at the Highways Excellence Awards as recognition of their partnership with Ringway Jacobs.
The Council is one of 106 Local Authorities to sign up to the standardised NHT survey that will ask members of the public exactly the same questions.
The survey, which is being run for the ninth year, is the largest collaboration between Local Authorities offering the opportunity to compare results, share in best practice and identify further opportunities to work together in the future.
The questionnaire will be sent to a minimum random sample of 12,000 Essex residents from today (27 June), followed by a reminder.
Local and national results will be published in mid-October 2016.
Cllr Eddie Johnson, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “We are investing heavily in the county’s road and transport links.
“As a result, residents are now beginning to feel the benefits of this with new road surfacing, bus and cycle links and a significant reduction in defects on our county’s roads.
“Now it’s time for the public to tell us what they think about how we invest taxpayers’ money into road and transport improvements.
“We are also keen to make sure everyone is aware of the infrastructure investment and everyday maintenance work we are doing on a daily basis to ensure Essex’s transport network supports future housing and economic growth.
“I would urge residents, who receive a copy of the independent survey, to respond to this and give us their thoughts, thereby helping us to explore ways to improve in the future.”
Residents that receive the questionnaire can complete the survey online if they prefer; a short web URL link will be printed on the front of the questionnaire and they will be required to enter a code before completing the questionnaire.
The results provide one of several ways Essex County Council can assess how it is performing. It gives the public an opportunity to say which services they think the Council should prioritise, and improve.
