Planning permission has been granted for 31 new apartments on the former Library warehouse site in Goldlay Gardens, Chelmsford.
The site, owned by Essex County Council, previously provided the headquarters and warehousing for the Essex Library Service. The planning permission granted to the County Council will see the site developed with 31 new one and two bedroom apartments.
Cllr John Spence, Cabinet Member responsible for Housing, said: “This site will provide much needed new homes close to the city centre.”
“This is an important part of our ongoing project to identify and bring forward unused pieces of land for housing. Land owned by the public sector, is ultimately owned by the taxpayer, and it’s important that we, as the custodians of it, bring it to use in the most appropriate way.”
The site will now be made ready for construction with the demolition of existing buildings, with the view to construction starting in 2017.
