Remember to apply for secondary school places

17 October 2016

Parents are being reminded to apply for their children’s secondary school places as the deadline for applications approaches.

Parents and carers of children due to start at secondary school (Year 7) in September 2017 have until 31 October 2016 to make an application.

It is vital an application is received by the closing date, with any applications made after the deadline only considered once all on-time applications have been determined.

Applications can be made online. Parents can also search for school information, and check admissions criteria.

Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “It is very important that applications for secondary school places are submitted on time and I would urge any parents yet to do so to ensure they have applied by October 31.

“Parents are encouraged to use all six of the preferences available and to make use of the information available on the website before making an application.

“They should also carefully consider the admissions criteria for each school they wish to apply.”

About 94 per cent of pupils starting secondary school in 2016 were offered one of their parents’ top two preferences of school.

Essex County Council is planning to spend about £360million creating thousands more school places across the county over the next three years.
