Shakespeare quotes are set to take social media by storm this weekend after Essex Libraries joined a campaign to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of the famous playwright.
Visitors to libraries in Essex will be encouraged to photograph themselves with their favourite quotation from the works of William Shakespeare on Saturday, 23 April before uploading the image to social media with the hashtag #Shakespeare16.
As part of a national campaign to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of the famous playwright , Shakespeare quotes and the man himself – in the form of a life-sized cardboard cutout – will be appearing in a number of libraries across Essex to help ensure stylish snaps for library goers.
Cllr Anne Brown, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Corporate, Communities and Customers, said: “The works of Shakespeare have had a huge effect on our culture and how we speak today. For hundreds of years people have enjoyed timeless works such as Romeo and Juliet, Othello and Macbeth.
“We want to see what is Essex’s most popular Shakespeare quotation and hopefully, in the process, introduce readers to his lesser known works.
“Anyone can get involved by heading to their nearest library where we have 20 of Shakespeare’s top quotes on placards to help people get started and inspire those struggling to choose from his vast array of works.”
Cllr Brown and Chief Executive, Gavin Jones, this week posed with their favourite Shakespeare phrase ahead of Saturday in a bid to encourage others to join in.
Libraries across Essex have a number of events over the coming months to celebrate the works of Shakespeare 400 years after he died in 1616.
