In accordance with the Local Government Transparency Code we are required to publish the following information

Trade union facility time

In relation to teaching trade unions, Essex County Council provides Schools with Direct Schools Grant (DSG) funding which is used to fund union representatives within Essex’s Schools. This means we are unable to provide you with an FTE equivalent or estimation of this data because the only information we receive in relation to facility time for these schools trade unions are claims for the reimbursement from the individual schools for cover.

 

Local authorities must publish the following information on trade union facility time:

 

Total number (absolute number and full time equivalent) of staff who are union representatives (including general, learning and health and safety representatives)

Total number (absolute number and full time equivalent) of union representatives who devote at least 50 per cent of their time to union duties.

A basic estimate of spending on unions (calculated as the number of full time equivalent days spent on union duties multiplied by the average salary).
 
  • £90,895 which incorporates salary, pension and NI contributions for the two trade union representatives mentioned in part 1 & 2 and small amount of money for ancillary costs.
  • As per the above statement relating to Trade Union representatives working in schools however can confirm that, as at December 2014 the total spend relating to trade unions within the Direct Schools Grant (DSG) was £46,781. For information the total spend for 2013/14 was £117,565.
 
A basic estimate of spending on unions as a percentage of the total pay bill (calculated as the number of full time equivalent days spent on union duties multiplied by the average salary divided by the total pay bill).
