  Winter Service

6 December 2013

We want you to travel as safely as possible during the winter and it's our aim to keep major roads free from ice and snow. On this page you can find information about staying safe during harsh weather and how to check if a school or council service is open.

School closures

Most schools communicate with parents regarding closures. You can check if your school is closed by contacting it directly.

Winter travel

Our aim is to keep major roads salted and traffic moving during the winter months.

You can find out more about:

We concentrate on a defined network of the most important routes to keep everyone moving, this includes A and B roads and those with a frequent bus service.

We are unable to salt the majority of residential estate roads and rural lanes.

We are not responsible for:

  • the A12, A120, M11 and M25 which are maintained by the Highways Agency. Tel: 0300 123 5000.
  • the A130, between the A12 and the A127 is maintained by County Route Tel: 0845 351 1130.
  • roads in Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea are maintained by those local authorities.

Where possible we will focus on clearing pathways in town centre shopping areas and those to train and bus stations.

If you want to clear snow from your local footpath information and guidance is available.
