Welcome to the cycling and walking pages.
Cycling and walking are ideal for undertaking short journeys or linking to other modes of transport. They are also great for improving health and fitness. The most important things to remember are:
- Be seen, be safe;
- Wear reflective clothing at night;
- Use lights at night;
- Check your lights and brakes before setting off.
You can cycle on the whole of the road network with the exception of motorways. These are clearly indicated by signs and markings. Cyclists can also use routes marked as byways or bridleways.
These pages will give you information on:
Cycling
The Essex countryside is ideal for cycling, with gentle gradients and an abundance of country lanes, byways and bridleways within easy reach of towns. Essex County Council is promoting cycling throughout the county in partnership with local councils, the sustainable cycling charity Sustrans and other user groups.
Walking
Walking is a popular recreational pursuit and the greenest form of transport available. Regular walking can help improve your health and we work in partnership with many other organisations to promote and encourage it.
