Describing a pothole or problem to us

When you are reporting a pothole or other highway problem to us please provide as much information as possible. This helps us quickly locate the problem and determine action needed according to the level of risk it poses to pedestrians or motorists.

Telling us the name of the village, town or parish, of a problem you are reporting, will help us quickly identify the location of a pothole or other defect. In some cases a street or road can run through several villages so this information can help confirm the location of the problem.

Telling us the name of the road and noting landmarks will help us quickly find the exact location of a pothole or other defect. Please give as much landmark information as you can, for example:

  • Outside a house name or number
  • Opposite a house name or number
  • Near a junction name, roundabout name or set of traffic lights
  • Near a lamp post or telegraph pole, giving the number displayed
  • If in the countryside please note any bends in the road, bridges or buildings

Providing a detailed description of a pothole or highway problem helps our assessment of action needed. Please tell us where the problem is on the road or a pavement, for example, on the edge or near the middle along with your estimate of the width and depth of the problem.

Please do not take risks when assessing the dimensions of a problem, our team will undertake a thorough inspection once your report has been received.
