While cycling is a fun and healthy pastime, it is essential to make sure that all aspects of safety are considered. Here are some important safer cycling tips:
- Make sure you are aware of all other road users whilst you are cycling;
- Remember to look behind before you make any manoeuvre;
- Give clear signals of intent to other road users;
- Wear something reflective at night time, or florescent during the day;
- Look out for worn brake blocks or badly adjusted brakes;
- Make sure tyres are inflated with a good tread and no bald patches;
- Make sure reflectors and lights are fitted and working, it is illegal to ride without a rear reflector.
Owning a bike can open up all kinds of new possibilities for leisure activity. Even if you only use your bike for
travelling to and from school or work, cycling will get you out into the fresh air and will improve your health and fitness. It is also kind to the environment.
Cycle Helmets
Make sure your helmet conforms to one of the following safety standards:
- BS EN 1078;
- ANSI Z90 – 4;
- SNELL B90;
- AS 2063.
Remember:
- Your helmet should fit properly and always have the chin strap fastened;
- Renew your helmet immediately if you are involved in an accident, have a fall or it gets badly scratched, dropped or knocked.
