Democratically accountable councils have a unique capacity to serve the interests of local citizens. However, a focus on deficit reduction, a commitment to localism and a desire to open up public services have created the conditions where local government must reconsider how best to meet residents’ needs.
Future Council asks a number of fundamental questions about the roles and responsibilities of local authorities. It suggests that councils redefine their core purpose, articulate more clearly their operating model, consider afresh their relationships with communities and customers, and assess more dynamically their appetite for economic growth and financial risk.
