A historic building in Essex
Essex County Council provides a number of services relating to the preservation and management of the county’s rich heritage. Many of these services are provided to district and borough councils, and support their efforts to manage the heritage in their areas. Others are services that provide information and advice to the people of the county. These activities are all managed through the Historic Environment team.
 

Unlocking Essex’s past and the Essex Historic Environment Record (EHER)

Information about the EHER, and the council’s online portal allowing access to information about all historic buildings, archaeological sites and historic landscapes within the county boundaries (and Thurrock unitary authority).
 

Heritage at Risk Register

Information about historic buildings and archaeological monuments within the county boundaries, that are considered to be in a poor state of repair.
 

Listed buildings

Information relating to categories and numbers of listed buildings within the county.
 

Publications

Books and leaflets published by the Historic Environment team.
 

Specialist advice

Information about the services provided to district and borough councils (and to Thurrock unitary authority) by the Historic Environment team.
 

Traditional building courses

The annual programme of short courses, lectures and workshops about traditional building skills.
 

Mills in Essex

Information relating to the historic mills managed by Essex County Council.
 

Policies

Information relating to the national policies that provide the framework within which the Historic Environment team works.
