The Lord Lieutenant of Essex

Who the Lord Lieutenant is and what they do

The current Lord Lieutenant of Essex is Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst.

She is the Kings’ personal representative in Essex , including Southend and Thurrock.

The appointment is non-political and unpaid. Its purpose is to support business, industry and the social life of the county.

The Lord Lieutenant’s main duties are to represent the King in the county including:

  • liaison with the armed forces

  • assessing nominations for honour

  • representing the King at citizenship ceremonies
