New team working towards net zero housing

We have set up a new team to drive forward net zero and sustainable development in Essex.

The Climate and Planning Unit (CaPU) forms part of our commitment to meet key net zero targets.

The Essex Climate Action Commission report, Net Zero: Making Essex Carbon Neutral, sets out how we'll achieve net zero in Essex by 2050. The report calls for a team of experts to support district councils and developers to build greener homes.

The CaPU will deliver on our net zero commitments by:

  • working with partner authorities to set net zero policy
  • providing a network of best practise and training for local authority planners, councillors, and developers
  • supporting the 12 Essex Districts with planning applications received

Residents will benefit from better health and wellbeing outcomes as the team works towards a greener Essex.

New homes in Essex will be less reliant on fossil fuel and cheaper to run. This comes at a time where fuel poverty and the cost of living is high.

The team were recognised for their work at the Essex Housing Awards in 2023. They won in the Climate Action - Low / Zero Carbon in New Homes category.

CaPU’s work has helped shape the energy efficiency standards of 20,000 new homes planned for two new garden communities.
