Researching family history

The main sources held by the Essex Record Office (ERO) that are of use to individuals researching family history are parish registers, census returns, wills, records of electors and taxpayers, Poor Law records, and family and estate records. These documents can be identified remotely on Seax, or viewed by visiting the Essex Record Office

Researching house history

If you live in an old building and want to learn about its history, the ERO can help.

The House History in Essex leaflet contains information of use to anyone starting to research the history of their home or other building. It provides details of how the ERO's resources can be used to uncover a building’s past.

Using the Search Service

The ERO can carry out some types of research on your behalf. Details of how you can contact the Search Service, the types of searches that can be requested and the fees that are charged may be found on the Search Service page.
