10 library things to do before you’re 5

19 May 2017

Checklist will inspire parents and children to make the most of their libraries

Essex Libraries has launched 10 Library Things – a checklist to help parents and children get the most out of their local library.
The listicle is a fun way for children and families to explore their local library and discover all of the great events and services on offer.
The ten library things to do before you’re 5 are..

  • Join the library – either in person or online
  • Choose your first book to borrow
  • Come to a Baby and Toddler Rhymetime - a great way to introduce children to the library, help with their language and communication development and give parents a chance to meet and chat with each other
  • Borrow a starting school bag or book – a great way to introduce starting school
  • Read with Me Under a Tree - reading doesn’t have to be an indoor activity, if the weather is nice why not get outside in your local green space. A list of books and themed activity sheets – including Stick Man, Mad About Minibeasts, Superworm and Welly Walks - are also available online, so families can take their story times into the garden or a local green space.
  • Collect your free Bookstart Baby Pack from your health visitor – full  of great books and tips on sharing books with your baby
  • Find a book to help with a new experience – we have books that can help with moving house, going on a sleepover or getting a new brother or sister
  • Collect your free Bookstart Treasure Pack from your child’s pre-school, which includes a book plus tips and ideas on reading together
  • Borrow a recommended read – if you need some ideas of books to share with your child check out our regularly updated recommended reads.
  • Take part in the Summer Reading Challenge – running in all Essex Libraries every summer. Children of all ages can take part and younger children can take part by sharing a story with a grown-up or older sibling. There is a special collector card and stickers for under threes.
