From Saturday 2 Feb Essex Traffic Control Centre is set to extend its operating hours and provide a service to Essex residents, media and road users from 9 till 5.30pm on a Saturday.
The Essex Traffic Control Centre already provides Twitter updates (followed by over 51,000 people), interactive map info via www.roadworks.org
, broadcast reports and live updates to many SatNavs Monday to Friday 6am to 8pm. Now the services will also be offered on Saturdays from 9am to 5.30pm.
Traditionally road traffic on Saturdays was much less than weekdays. But, as work patterns have changed and with increasing car ownership and use for shopping and leisure, Saturdays have got busier, while drivers now expect instant live information.
Councillor Kevin Bentley, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, said: “Extending the operating hours of the Essex Traffic Control Centre will help keep traffic moving on Saturdays – supporting business and reducing the frustrations felt by all drivers when they meet delays.”
The Essex Traffic Control Centre is based at County Hall in Chelmsford and has now been supporting better travel in Essex since 2004.
