17 October 2018

With just one month to go until the deadline, pupils, parents and school staff are encouraged to ensure their vote counts by making a nomination for the 2019 Essex Teaching Awards.

The annual awards - now in their sixth year - are run by Essex County Council and recognise the outstanding contribution made by teachers and school staff in the county's schools.

This year's awards will also help recognise individuals working in the Early Years sector, with the addition of two brand-new categories – 'Early Years and Childcare Practitioner of the year' and 'Childminder of the year'.

The full list of categories includes:

  • New teacher of the year
  • Teaching assistant of the year
  • Primary school teacher of the year
  • Secondary school teacher of the year
  • Special school teacher of the year
  • Primary headteacher of the year
  • Secondary headteacher of the year
  • Governing body of the year
  • School team of the year
  • Childminder of the year
  • Early years and childcare practitioner of the year (in the PVI sector)
  • Lifetime achievement
  • Student choice

Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Everyone spends time in the formal education system and it's the actions of individuals working in schools and early years settings that can influence some of the biggest decisions we'll ever make.

“The Essex Teaching Awards give us the opportunity to ensure those individuals get the recognition they deserve, allowing us to not only identify and celebrate them, but also share best practice across the wider education sector.

“Over the past five years the awards have acknowledged outstanding teachers and headteachers, teaching assistants, governing bodies and school teams who work in Essex. I'm excited we now also have the opportunity to celebrate our Early Years colleagues who such play a vital role in supporting children to be school ready.

“I would encourage everyone to think about the excellent contributions made by school staff and nominate anyone you feel is deserving of an award."

Nominations will close on Friday 16 November 2018 and the ceremony will take place in February 2019.
