Trading Standards warning: don’t get misled by cheap energy bill promises

7 February 2017

Essex Trading Standards are warning of cold callers selling supposed money saving central heating systems. In reality the cost to install the systems will often massively outweigh the money you will save on reduced energy costs.

Essex residents have been quoted between £5,000 and £15,000 for the cost to purchase and install devices. Even in the unlikely event it saved the average household 20% of its annual gas bill, it would take at best many decades to recover the initial cost, and more likely the cost will never be recovered.

Homeowners would benefit more from investing in good quality controls, thermostatic radiator valves, energy efficient circulators or a power clean of their existing system.

In addition, energy bills could potentially be reduced by registering with the Essex Energy Switch – a free, no obligation collective auction for competitive energy rates. The scheme is open now and all residents need to know is their current tariff and consumption of energy in kWh or spend.

Cllr Anne Brown, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Corporate and Communities, said: “Residents should seek independent advice before purchasing these products and, as ever, always say no to cold callers. If you are concerned call the national Trading Standards Helpline on 03454 04 05 06.”
