Conservation areas

A conservation area is a specific local area that is recognised as being worthy of preservation or enhancements. Responsibility for conservation areas within Essex lies at the district, borough and unitary authority level.

Residents with queries relating to conservation areas should contact their local council for further information:

Brentwood
Castlepoint
Chelmsford
Colchester
Epping forest
Harlow
Maldon
Rochford
Tendring
Thurrock
Uttlesford

Living within a conservation area places special requirements on new developments, including extensions, in order to ensure that the special qualities of that area are preserved.

Trees in conservation areas

Special provision is also provided for protecting trees within conservation areas. Anyone proposing to cut down or carry out work to a tree in a conservation area is required to give their district and borough council six weeks’ prior notice. It is an offence to carry out work within that period without specific consent from the council.
